Sump Pump Installation & Replacement Service

Sump Pump Installation and Replacement
in Maryland, Washington D.C., and Northern Virginia

Why Do You Need A Sump Pump in DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia?

If you own a home in Alexandria or anywhere else in metro Washington, D.C., you need a modern sump pump installed and ready to protect your investment. Because basements are typically below ground level, draining the water out is nearly impossible without a quality sump pump. The longer stagnant, polluted water sits in your home, the more extensive and potentially dangerous (and expensive) damage it can cause. The Washington, D.C., area has some of the oldest homes on the East Coast and receives an average of 114 rainy days each year, totaling nearly 40 inches of rain. In our headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia, and throughout the Washington, D.C., Northern Virginia, and Maryland areas, John C. Flood helps homeowners install and replace sump pumps. Managing sump pumps is just part of being a homeowner in the DMV, and we’re the experts here to help.

Types of Sump Pumps

There are two types of sump pumps that John C. Flood installs. Let’s take a look at your options as a homeowner.

A pedestal sump pump features a motor mounted on a small pedestal with a pipe leading down to the sump pit. A float, similar to those in toilets, rises with the water level to activate the pump’s switch when flooding occurs. As water fills the sump pit, the float triggers the pump, draining floodwater to the septic system. The motor remains above water and can last up to 30 years.

The submersible sump pump is designed to operate underwater. When basement flooding occurs, water triggers the impeller for suction, while a filter prevents debris from causing damage that could necessitate repairs.

The main advantage of a submersible sump pump is that it’s hidden from view and quieter than a pedestal pump. However, it can be more expensive and may have a shorter lifespan compared to pedestal models.

Signs You Need A New Sump Pump

While no one wants to think about installing or replacing a sump pump, sometimes it can’t be helped. If you notice any of the following, contact a professional immediately.

  • Basement flooding: If your basement experiences flooding, your sump pump might be failing to remove water effectively, indicating a potential malfunction or complete failure.
  • Constant running: A sump pump that runs continuously may have a stuck switch or be undersized for the water volume around your home, leading to the need for replacement.
  • Irregular on-off cycles: Erratic cycling can point to issues with the float switch or wiring, causing unnecessary strain on the pump.
  • Excessive noise and vibrations: Unusual sounds or vibrations often indicate damaged components like bearings or impellers.
  • Issues draining: If the sump pump struggles to drain water properly, it could be due to clogs, mechanical failure, or an improperly sized pump.
  • Visible rust: The presence of rust or corrosion can impede the pump’s functionality and may indicate the development of iron bacteria, suggesting it’s time for a replacement.

At John C. Flood, we take customer service seriously. That’s why we offer coupons for our customers, so you can enjoy peace of mind while we take care of your home.
